The Bard was so omnipotent in 19th century culture that Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in his journal that beings on other planets probably called the Earth “Shakespeare”:
If Intellect perceives & converses ‘in climes beyond the solar road,’ they probably call this planet, not earth, but Shakespeare. In teleology, they will come to say, that the final cause of the creation of the earth was Shakespeare.
